D is a Dhampir (or Dunpeal depending upon the translation), the spawn of a vampire father and human mother. ![]() The main story follows the exploits of a vampire hunter simply named D. There are 17 Vampire Hunter D novels in all, supplemented by two animated feature films and a little known PlayStation game. The story's rich world originated in the novels (the wordy kind, not the graphic kind), written by legendary Japanese horror author Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by also-legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano. The Story Vampire Hunter D is a classic franchise that has spanned over two decades, and it's still going strong. In this guide we finally give the Devil his due, and pay all deserved praise to D. Even the relatively few anime fans that have seen the movies usually don't know just how epic the franchise is, and how historically significant the work is to the anime industry and the gothic horror genre as a whole.
